Introduction: The contemporary paradigm of occupational therapy bases the practice and identity of the occupational therapist through occupational sciences. Within the Specialized Alzheimer's Teams, occupational therapists are required to delegate care activities to the gerontological assistant. In this context of interdisciplinary teamwork, the occupational therapist is led to transmit and make apply this occupation-centred practice to the gerontological assistant. The purpose of this study is to show that a collaboration between the occupational therapist and the gerontological assistant during the development of the intervention plan allows the implementation of an occupation-centred practice.
Method: This study was carried out through semi-structured interviews with occupational therapists and the gerontological assistant practicing in Specialized Alzheimer's Teams and integrating a practice centered on occupation. All of the interviews were analyzed through thematic analysis.
Results: The results of this survey show that the occupational therapist is required to formally or informally train the gerontological assistant to an occupational approach. Also, to support their actions, they rely on the skills developed by the gerontological assistant as nursing assistants or educational and social assistants.
Conclusion: Collaboration between the occupational therapist and the gerontological assistant in the development of the intervention plan is not an essential prerequisite for the establishment of an approach centered on occupation in Specialized Alzheimer's Teams.
