Introduction: People with paraplegia suffer from bladder and sphincter disorders, which have a significant impact on their quality of life and occupational engagement. Collaboration with patient experts in the care pathway has recently emerged as a promising approach to improve care and support for other patients. The objective of this study is to explore the impact of integrating patient experts into care on the occupational re-engagement of those affected.
Methods: This study adopted a qualitative methodology, through four semi-structured interviews. A hybrid analysis combining a deductive approach based on the Conceptual Model of Performance and Occupational Engagement (CMPOE), and an inductive approach based on the emerging themes from the participants' speeches was conducted, to critique and synthesize the results.
Results: The small number of participants does not allow for the generalization of results. The study highlights the impact of bladder and sphincter disorders on the daily lives of paraplegic patients, and the central role of the occupational therapist in functional and organizational adaptation. In addition, the role of the expert patient in sharing experiences, tips, and support is promoted, fostering a complementarity.
Conclusion: A co-constructed collaboration between an occupational therapist and an expert patient appears to be an essential complementarity to strengthen occupational engagement, and to achieve a better occupational balance for the paraplegic patient.
