In France, around one million people have survived a stroke. Motor and cognitive
impairment have also consequences on relatives. Back home, activities of daily life
and relationships are disturbed particularly due to informal care. The aim of this study
is to understand the role of the occupational therapist in the support of occupational
participation of the couple at home after a stroke and whether they used co-occupation
clinically.
To answer that question, 4 semi-structured interviews were conducted with
occupational therapists providing home-based care in different settings (HAD-r, EMER,
SAMSAH).
Results show that occupational therapists involve the spouse in the therapeutic
relationship, assessment and support. They focus on sustaining independence and
autonomy and also on managing informal care. Occupational therapists use cooccupations
particularly in supporting leisure activities and addressing intimacy and
sexual matters. - IFE ADERE
