  • New technologies are constantly evolving. Engineers design innovative Electric Wheelchairs (EWs) with little contact with patients. Sometimes for market concerns, their goals differ from those of occupational therapists in designing EWs. The reality is that EWs are not always adapted to the needs of patients. A patient-focused collaboration between the engineer and the occupational therapist seems to promote a patient-friendly design. Yet this concept of adaptability to the needs of the individual is part of a more comprehensive concept of appropriation. Appropriation is measured after the product has been introduced into the person's life in relation to his or her activities. The following assumption is made: this collaboration at the design stage promotes the appropriation of the EWs by the individual. A qualitative experimentation is envisaged : interviews are to be conducted with occupational therapists who have participated in the design of an innovative EWs in collaboration with engineers and who have followed the patient after the introduction of the EWs in his or her life context.
