These professionals have to master multiple skills, at the same time physical, cognitive and relational. So far, they do not have enough means and knowledge about this practice. Therefore, they are not able to answer to the double requirement of this care : protect both the quality of life of the residents as well as their own health.

Hypothesis : The occupational therapist allows caregivers to meet the safe-patient handling care requirements more easily, giving them the means to encourage resident participation during their transfers.
Method : Interviews were realized with 3 binomials occupational therapist/caregiver working in collaboration during the daily patients-handlings of the residents in nursing homes.
Results : The occupational therapist allows caregivers to really adapt their support according to each resident’s transfer capacities, while preserving their own health. He indicates them the most appropriate handling means. He teaches them how to operate equipment and means of guidance to the elderly person according to the situation. His frequent reminders assure a real new knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, thanks to his field issues’ analyse and his expertise with technical aids, the occupational therapist can participate in the acquisition process of lifting and positioning aids. Such action facilitates the caregivers’s work and allows for better residents’s participation during the safe patient handlings.
