Context: Post-stroke apathy represents a brake on the patient’s engagement to rehabilitation, which questions the value of meaning in the activities offered in occupational therapy.
Aims: To explore how occupational therapists promote occupational engagement in patient with post-stroke apathy by linking analytical activities to meaningful occupations in Medical and care Rehabilitation.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with three occupational therapists practicing in neurological Medical and car Rehabilitation who have experience working with post-troke apathic patients. A thematic analysis was performed on the collected data.
Results/Discuss: The results demonstrate that meaningful occupation is the primary drive of patient engagement in their rehabilitation. The occupational therapists also emphasize that apathy results from a loss of initiative without the patient necessarily being resistant. The thematic analysis reveals that there is no opposition between bottom-up and top-down approaches, but rather a clear complementarity.
Conclusion: The implementation of analytical activities and meaningful occupations stimulates the engagement of apathic patients. - IFE ADERE
