  • The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a public health issue given the important number of children
concerned. This disorder has a direct impact on the daily living activities of children. The person
presents occupational performance limitations in their occupations, such as self-care. Collaboration
with the child’s parents is known to have a beneficial impact on the child’s care. However, the use of
parental guidance is new in our profession and its benefits on the occupational performance for the
child with autism hasn’t been researched yet. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of
parental guidance on the occupational performance the child in their self-care activities. The research
question was based on qualitative criteria, and three semi-structured interviews were conducted with
occupational therapists using parental guidance in their freelance activity. This survey highlights the
importance of the collaboration with child’s parents as well as the aim of the parental guidance in the
transfer of the acquired skills allowing the increase of the child’s occupational performance. Given the
small sample size, the data collected does not allow for a general conclusion. However, it does provide
a basis for reflection on the therapy provided by occupational therapists working with children on the
    autism spectrum.
