Background: Schizophrenia, due to its high prevalence in the population, its significant impact on the daily activities of those affected, and its high propensity for relapse, is now a public health issue.
In a community and social psychiatric context, family caregivers of people with schizophrenia play a key role in their recovery. However, this role is associated with significant burden and occupational imbalance. Objective: This study aims to explore the role of occupational therapists in improving occupational balance and reducing the burden of these caregivers within these family psychoeducation programs.
Method: A qualitative study was conducted through interviews with occupational therapists working in family psychoeducation programs for family caregivers of people with schizophrenia.
Results: The results showed that occupational therapists struggled to carry out specific interventions within these programs, and that the occupational balance of these caregivers, even if it is noted that it is improving, is rarely assessed objectively. Conclusion: The current integration of occupational therapists into these programs, given the limited scope for manoeuvre and the inability of long-term monitoring, has only a limited impact on improving the occupational balance of these caregivers. However, new perspectives, particularly related to the evolving status of caregivers as occupational beings and greater freedom of intervention for occupational therapists, have been identified and remain to be explored.
