Occupational balance in mothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) : support through occupational therapy
Context: Mothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may face specific challenges related to motherhood, which can lead to occupational imbalance. These difficulties may notably be associated with impaired executive functioning and social abilities. As these aspects fall within the scope of Occupational Therapists (OTs) practice, occupational therapy support may be beneficial in addressing motherhood-related needs in mothers with ASD.
Objective: This research aimed to understand how OTs can support mothers with ASD to recovering occupational balance after the birth of their child.
Methods: A qualitative method combined with a hypothetico-deductive approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with occupational therapists to collect empirical data.
Results: The result, based on the experience of three OTs, highlight that occupational therapy support for mothers with ASD aimed to improve their daily lives and promote engagement in meaningful activities. This support may focus on mental flexibility, maternal routines and social abilities. It also helps to promote interactions with their children and professionals.
Conclusion: OTs play a key role in supporting mothers with ASD. They may help them regain occupational balance by supporting the reorganization of their maternal and daily activities. - Rouen
