  • INTRODUCTION - Children victims of abuse see their daily lives negatively impacted, especially in the school setting where their engagement is low. Recent research confirms that they also have sensory disorders. However, there is a therapy, Sensory Integration (SI), which is used in other countries with children victims of abuse has been shown to allow them to better engage in their daily activities.
OBJECTIVES - By identifying sensory disorders in children who have been abused and who are receiving therapy services from occupational therapists in an ITEP, the objective objective of this research is to show that the practice of SI could contribute to the child's well-being and allow him to be more engaged in school.
METHODS - Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews was used with two occupational therapists who work in an ITEP with abused children.
RESULTS - Research indicated that there is a link between abuse and poor school engagement. The interviews conducted confirm this finding and impulsive and aggressive behaviour, which are inappropriate in the school context of abused children, have been mentioned. The occupational therapists who treat these children in an ITEP notice that sensory and motor activities help them to calm down and become more engaged. The interviews also helped to identify sensory disorders. SI, which is currently not used with this population in France, help the children to self-manage, to better understand their environment, to favour their social relationships, their self-confidence and thus their engagement.
CONCLUSION - It would be interesting to implement the use of NSI with abused children to regulate their sensory disorders and to participate in a better school engagement. However, interviewing more occupational therapists will allow for a better projection.
