Intimacy and sexuality of the multi-disabled person in institution : the role of the occupational therapist for a fulfilling life course

  • Introduction : Despite the progress made over the last fifty years, intimacy and sexuality are notions that continue to be ignored when it concerns disability. Yet sexuality is part of an individual's quality of life. This dissertation will focus on multi-disabled people in specialised homes. The professionals try to meet the needs of residents as best they can despite their lack of knowledge on these subjects, but what about occupational therapy ? There are few bibliographical references on occupational therapy intervention in the intimacy and sexuality of this public, which does not allow us to identify what is being done in the field. Objective : The purpose of the research is to identify the role of occupational therapists and the process of their intervention in order to promote intimacy and sexuality in the life course of multiply disabled adults in institutions. Method : Four semi-directive interviews have been conducted by videoconference in order to analyse occupational therapy practice in the field. For this study, we used the Bardin analysis. Results : The intervention of the occupational therapist is above all based on an interdisciplinary approach and on the communication. They have an awareness-raising and training role. They bases their intervention on observations and adapts the different occupational therapy approaches to each case. Conclusion : To answer to the needs of residents, the professionals work in an interdisciplinary approach. Moreover, a holistic vision of the person, taking into account her environment and her needs, allows the occupational therapist to intervene on a case-by-case basis. There is no specific intervention plan for this population, but it is by preserving intimacy that we allow residents to have a fulfilling sexuality.
